Knowledge Through a Framework, Knowledge of the Framework

Scientific Progress, Framework-Level Understanding, and the Epistemic Career of Developmental Form A Two-Paper Research Project

1. THE KNOWLEDGE PROBLEM

Scientific inquiry normally directs attention toward phenomena, mechanisms, relations, models, and evidence. An organising framework helps determine what counts as a relevant problem, which explanatory roles are available, what evidence bears on a claim, and what constitutes success.

Such inquiry can produce substantial progress.

But progress achieved through a framework is not identical with progress in understanding the framework itself.

A field may improve its mechanisms, measurements, causal models, explanatory precision, and predictive success while leaving other questions comparatively unresolved: why particular explanatory forms organise the field, how explanatory responsibility is distributed, what warrants movement between levels, what counts as an admissible problem, or what preserves the identity of the framework under revision.

The governing question of this project is therefore:

What changes when an organising framework ceases to function only as a means of inquiry and becomes itself an object to be understood?

The two papers examine that transition from different but connected directions.

Their shared claim is limited but consequential:

Progress established with respect to one explanandum does not by itself establish corresponding progress with respect to another.

Once the explanandum changes, the evidential burden changes with it.

2. WHY TWO PAPERS?

The project distinguishes between object-directed inquiry and framework-directed inquiry.

Object-directed inquiry asks questions such as:

What happens? How does it happen? Which mechanisms, processes, relations, or constraints explain the phenomenon?

Framework-directed inquiry asks a different class of questions:

How is this field of inquiry organised? What makes these mechanisms, evidential relations, standards, and boundaries parts of one explanatory architecture? How did that architecture, or an explanatory form associated with it, acquire its historical and epistemic standing?

The two papers divide this larger task.

Paper I develops the structural and epistemological problem created when the framework itself becomes the explanandum.

Paper II independently reconstructs the historical and epistemic career of developmental form in relation to evolutionary scientific authority.

The papers are therefore analytically ordered but evidentially independent.

The first formalizes the target shift and its epistemic consequences.

The second shows what additional distinctions become relevant when historical formation, scientific warrant, authority, transmission, institutionalisation, genealogy, and rival explanatory grammars become objects of inquiry.

3. PAPER I — WHEN THE FRAMEWORK BECOMES THE EXPLANANDUM

Scientific Progress, Framework-Level Understanding, and the Limits of Within-Framework Inquiry

The first paper isolates a non-entailment:

ΔU_F(X) > 0 ⇏ ΔFLU(F) > 0

An increase in understanding achieved through a framework F with respect to an explanandum X does not automatically constitute an increase in understanding of F itself.

The relevant transition is:

F: organising condition → F: explanandum

or, in question form:

Q(X) → Q(F)

This is the Change-of-Explanandum Principle. Inquiry conducted through the framework remains relevant after the shift, but its previous success is not sufficient merely by virtue of being successful. The target has changed.

The paper develops Framework-Level Understanding (FLU) as a minimum diagnostic architecture for this enlarged target:

FLU(F) ⊇ Grasp[G, J, B, A, C, R]

G — Explanatory Grammar: what kinds of relations may perform explanatory work.

J — Explanatory Jurisdiction: how explanatory responsibility is distributed.

B — Bridge Structure: what warrants movement between levels, scales, or domains.

A — Admissibility: which questions, variables, and forms of evidence may enter inquiry.

C — Criteria of Success: what counts as epistemic improvement.

R — Retention and Reopening: what may change while the framework remains the same framework, and what would justify reopening its architecture.

The profile is explicitly non-exhaustive. Additional dimensions may become relevant in particular cases.

The paper also introduces the Progress Attribution Error (PAE): an evidential-scope error in which an epistemic gain established for one explanandum is attributed to an enlarged explanandum without the additional warrant required by that enlargement.

Its governing discipline is:

Do not enlarge the scope of an epistemic achievement without enlarging the warrant to match the explanandum.

4. PAPER II — THE EPISTEMIC CAREER OF DEVELOPMENTAL FORM

Scientific Reauthorization, Institutional Translation, and Rival Grammars of Development and Regulation

The second paper does not simply apply FLU to a historical case.

Its object is more specific.

It defines developmental form as an explanatory structure in which a later configuration is rendered intelligible through historically structured transformation:

Earlier State → Historically Structured Transformation → Later Configuration

Developmental form is deliberately thinner than evolutionary theory, Darwinism, natural selection, progress narratives, or any single intellectual genealogy.

This distinction allows the paper to ask a different question:

What changes when an explanatory form that already exists becomes associated with a scientific framework that supplies selected transformational claims with stronger evidence and recognized scientific authority?

The historical reconstruction separates several events that can otherwise appear continuous.

An explanatory form may predate the scientific theory later associated with it.

A scientific programme may increase the warrant for particular propositions without originating the broader explanatory form.

Scientific authority may be invoked outside the original problem-space without transferring the original evidential warrant automatically.

A programme may acquire organisational carriers without the host institution adopting the programme as official doctrine.

An institution may perform a function whose intellectual genealogy lies elsewhere.

And a different explanatory grammar may enter the same social or governmental domain while organising a different explanandum.

The paper therefore reconstructs an epistemic career not as the movement of one unchanged entity, but as changing relations among explanatory form, claim-specific warrant, scientific authority, bridge propositions, intellectual and organisational carriers, institutionalisation, adoption, function, genealogy, and rival grammar.

Career does not imply continuous identity.

5. HOW THE PAPERS FIT TOGETHER

Paper I formalizes the change of explanandum. Paper II reconstructs what becomes visible when that change is carried into a historical-epistemic inquiry.

But this is an analytical relation, not a deductive one.

Paper II does not empirically validate FLU.

Its historical categories are not derivable from G, J, B, A, C, R.

Conversely, Paper I does not depend on the historical conclusions of Paper II for its central non-entailment to hold.

The papers therefore contribute different things to framework-directed inquiry.

Paper I asks what must be reconstructed when the organising architecture of inquiry becomes the target.

Paper II asks what must be separated when the target includes the historical and epistemic career of a framework or of an explanatory form associated with it.

Read together, they show that progress through a framework and progress in understanding its organisation or career are related but non-identical epistemic achievements.

6. WHAT CHANGES WHEN THE TARGET CHANGES?

A change of explanandum does not make earlier evidence irrelevant.

It changes what the evidence is being asked to establish.

Mechanism-level evidence may be sufficient for a mechanism-level claim.

It is not automatically sufficient for a claim about the historical origin of the explanatory architecture in which the mechanism appears.

Evidence that a concept travelled between domains may establish historical portability.

It does not by itself establish that the original warrant survived the inferential bridge.

Evidence that a programme acquired an institutional carrier may establish organisational persistence.

It does not automatically establish institutional adoption, scientific truth, or intellectual genealogy.

The general relation is therefore:

Change of Explanandum → Change in Relevant Evidential Burden

Where the new epistemic claim enlarges the target, the warrant must be enlarged accordingly.

Paper II makes the target-sensitivity of evidence especially concrete. Questions concerning origin require historical evidence; institutionalisation requires organisational records; cross-domain transferability requires analysis of bridge propositions; and rival grammar requires comparison of explanatory structures.

A framework need not cease to function as an organising condition of inquiry in order to become an object of inquiry in its own right.

The two roles can coexist.

7. DECOMPOSING APPARENT CONTINUITY

Once a framework or explanatory form becomes an explanandum, categories that appear continuous in disciplinary or historical narratives may need to be separated for evidential purposes.

Paper II formulates four particularly important boundaries:

Authority ≠ Origin

Portability ≠ Transferability

Function ≠ Genealogy

Domain ≠ Grammar

The point is not that the paired terms are unrelated.

The point is that evidence establishing one does not automatically establish the other.

The later scientific authority of evolutionary theory cannot determine where developmental form originated.

The historical movement of scientific language or authority cannot determine whether source-domain warrant survives a new bridge.

The function performed by an institution cannot by itself identify the genealogy of that function.

And two explanatory programmes can operate in the same policy or social domain while organising different primary explananda.

Framework-directed inquiry can therefore require a finer evidential decomposition than successful operation within the framework alone makes explicit.

8. BOUNDARY OF THE CONTRIBUTION

The project does not claim to introduce the idea that frameworks, theories, or methods can themselves become objects of inquiry.

It does not claim novelty for target-relative scientific progress.

It does not claim that theoretical material has never previously been treated as something to be understood.

It does not introduce the observation that concepts travel between disciplines or institutions.

And it does not propose a universal theory of all human knowledge.

Its contribution is narrower.

The project connects these established problem-spaces through a target-sensitive account of framework-directed inquiry.

Paper I isolates the warrant problem created when an epistemic achievement established for one explanandum is enlarged to a claim concerning the organising framework and provides a minimum structural architecture for that enlarged target.

Paper II independently specifies, for the historical reconstruction it undertakes, further evidential distinctions among form, warrant, authority, bridge, carrier, institution, function, genealogy, and rival grammar.

The project also does not claim that framework-directed inquiry is inherently deeper than mechanism-level science, that scientists generally fail to understand their own frameworks, that frameworks should be reopened continuously, or that epistemology can replace empirical science.

The relevant standard is adequacy relative to the explanandum, not epistemic rank.

Its governing discipline remains:

Match the evidential burden to the explanandum.

The paper establishes the distinction between progress through a framework and Framework-Level Understanding, develops the Change-of-Explanandum Principle, and specifies the minimum FLU architecture.

This is a recommended analytical reading order, not a logical or evidential dependency order.

Each paper retains an independent argument.

Their additional value arises from seeing the relation between their explananda.

10. THE LARGER KNOWLEDGE QUESTION

The project develops its argument within scientific inquiry.

Evolutionary science supplies the principal deep domain, while Paper I also uses a non-evolutionary control from quantum field theory. The resulting problem has broader epistemic significance, but the project does not convert that significance into a universal law of knowledge.

The central question is:

Can progress concerning the objects investigated through a framework outpace progress in understanding the framework through which those objects are investigated?

The project argues that this is possible.

It does not follow that the framework has failed.

It does not follow that existing scientific progress is illusory.

It means only that epistemic progress is indexed to a target.

Sometimes the next advance requires a better experiment, a more adequate mechanism, or a more precise model.

Sometimes the relevant advance begins by recognising that the object requiring explanation has changed.

At that point, previously accumulated knowledge remains indispensable.

But its evidential role must be reconsidered in relation to the new explanandum.

Knowledge can advance through a framework.

Knowledge of the framework can advance separately.

The two achievements constrain one another without collapsing into one.

Understanding knowledge therefore sometimes requires changing what counts as the object to be understood.
